Alternate Mounts

Post by dthempel »

Starting a sticky to keep track of alternate mounts and their effectiveness and/or attractiveness. If you're using a mount other than the included Barfly, post here with at least the mount name/model. If you have a picture of your setup, even better. Obviously, the Barfly only works for standard round handlebars. Any sort of aero profile would require a special mount.

The Karoo works with a Canyon mount on a H31 handlebar.

But only just. If the Karoo were a few millimeters larger and it wouldn't work.
It wiggles ever so slightly but that could be caused by the mold of the Karoo or the canyon mount. It stayed on the bike when I did a 100+ km with a lot of Gravel last Saturday.

Yes, the bell looks ugly, but it serves a purpose and makes the bike a fraction more legal.

No issues at all with K-Edge XL. I prefer the "non-wiggliness" of the Karoo in the Garmin-specific mount over that of the Barfly. I did have to pick up a 90º micro USB for charging while in use, as a std. cable end would not fit between the stem and the back of the Karoo.

I haven't ride-tested it, but a OTG Strap looks like it will work even on my thinner 26.0 handlebars on my Trek 5200. Try OTGstrap.com.

I use several bikes. So I looked for a cheap mount and found planet-x garmin mount. https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CTPXGAM/p ... rmin-mount. Current price is only 5 GBP.
Well it's quite simple designed but works fine as 1000er variant with karoo.

I do have a Canyon Grail and it doesn't fit with the Canyon Mount and the CP01 Cockpit. Original Karoo Mount also doesn't work for the bike.

What else could I try? Any suggestions?

That is a REALLY specific use-case with that handlebar. You might be better off contacting Canyon and asking for recommendations. A stem mount *might* work, but it depends on the steerer tube length and clearance?

Someone tried the Barfly Spoon with the Canyon Cockpits already? Looks, like it would fit?!

I'm still dual running with two head units. I have the Wahoo ELEMNT outfront on a K-Edge XL Combo Mount (which is rock solid) and am using the basic Garmin "rubber band" mount on the stem for the Karoo. The Karoo can move slightly in the mount, but not as much as it does in the HH supplied barfly mount. The combination of mount and Karoo is held very tightly in the limited space available because of it's position on the stem and the tension in the rubber bands. I also have the lanyard form the Karoo attached around the K-Edge mount so if a Garmin rubber band goes or the Karoo foot breaks, the Karoo shouldn't hit the deck.

If I decide to switch over to the Karoo as my main unit then I'll just change the puck in the K-Edge XL to the standard Garmin one.

Re: Alternate Mounts (22.2 mm)

Post by snoBent »

I ride a recumbent trike which does not have handlebars in the usual sense. But I have accessory posts and bars where I could mount the Karoo except that all of my bars are 22.2 mm and the Barfly model supplied (the Max) is designed for 31.8 to 35.0 mm. (On my bars, when fully tightened, the Barfly Max spins like a top.)

I have asked HH about the possibility of an exchange but have not heard back yet.

I have not yet tried a 22.2 mount, but I have identified the following possible options, and I am interested in anyone's experience of others with 22.2 bar mounts:
  • Barfly 4 TT
  • K-EDGE Garmin Sport TT/Aero Handlebar mount
  • Lixada 22.2mm TT/Aero Bike Handlebar Mount Stem Mount for Garmin Edge Computer
  • Bike Computer Mount with CNC Alloy Finish - GUB 669 Bicycle Handlebar Edge Mount
I am also interested in anyone's experience with those inexpensive, rubber inserts that allow a larger mount to clamp onto a smaller bar, like:
  • SunniMix 10 Pair Bike Bicycle Handlebar Mount Conversion Extender Spacer 22.2/25.4mm
For now, I have attached the Barfly Max to a front wheel strut, so I am literally looking at my crotch to see my Karoo.

I am currently using the Karoo on a triathlon bike and have it mounted to my aero bars (22.2)
  • I am currently using an X-Lab C-Fast mount and although it works there is a little bit of play
I like the C-fast because I can center the Karoo better than other mounts.
  • I have a K-Edge TT mount and will test it however I think the Karoo is too wide to fit
  • I have a barfly 4 and it works although it doesn't center.
I hope this helps.

After 2 barfly 4's that kept rotating on the bars then wearing through and breaking at the tightening point I have purchased and installed the barfly prime mount - all aluminium and its sooooo much better. Bought from Lord Gun in Italy online for £36.49 + delivery (7.33), why did I wait??? Plus comes with a huge assortment of different mounts and accessories.

Re: Alternate Mounts - Franken-mount

Post by jschriesheim »

After looking at the "native" Karoo 2 mount provided by Hammerhead, I decided to try the top portion of their mount fitted onto my K-Edge IHS mount on Canyon H31 bars. With a little fiddling, the mount worked great and the Karoo 2 snaps onto the mount much more firmly than when using the quarter-turn adapter and mount. I'm not done with setting this up yet as I need to figure out the screw situation. I'll need slightly longer screws to make sure the adapter is secure (it's thicker than the quarter-turn mount base), plus both the K-Edge aluminum base and the Karoo mount plate are threaded, so it would probably be best to drill out the threads on one of them and only screw into the other.

How did you do this?
My mount keeps on making noise on rougher terrain (cobbles).
I'm using a Closethegap mount + a garmin adapter on the backside of my karoo2.
