How do I get knowledge about map updates?

Settings > Offline Maps

If the latest is installed a green arrow will appear under "Nearby Maps".

Do not be tempted to click the green arrow out of curiosity, it will uninstall the region and you will need to download it again - not good when it is +2GB they could do with adding a pop-up confirmation dialogue warning it will be uninstalled.
