Donations towards the running of karoousers.org

Post by Steve »

As Doug mentioned in another post, we (Doug and I) have to pay for the hosting of karoousers.org. This was cheaper in the first year (low offer to get you on board), but I've recently renewed the hosting for the second year. I don't want to keep hopping around hosting providers to get their first-year offers because (a) it's a pain to keep moving, and (b) I'm very happy with the service provided by the current hosts (SiteGround, who I use a lot more heavily for some other sites).

So I've set up a Donations link above (next to Quick Links, just below the board photo) where you can make a small donation if you'd like to help us out with this. You don't have to donate, it's totally optional, just that it would help us out. Thanks in advance!

Has it disappeared meanwhile or am I just too thick to find it? :D I can see only the FAQ to the right of Quick Links. I'd be happy to shoot you a few bucks. But if it's not too much hassle to hop once more, I can also offer free hosting. I'm a sysadmin and have a dedicated server that serves as my playground to try out stuff, but it all happens in virtual machines so I don't have to sacrifice reliability -- it also has my personal blog and email account so I don't want that going down at random. I like to use static site generators for my sites so the webserver is just twiddling its thumbs there. There's no fancy control panel but some SFTP account should do it, right?

Thanks for the offer of free hosting, that's very kind. But I've already paid for another year's hosting and moving is a real hassle/

Wow that's weird. I'll look into that - perhaps it's only Doug and me that can see it? Thanks.

Ok, it was a permissions problem and I've fixed it.

Everyone should now (hopefully!) be able to see the Donations link between the "Quick Links" and "FAQ" links above.

Dang.. If I would have read that a bit earlier.
I'm running a co-located ESX server, where my mail, web, dns and other apps are hosted and administered by myself.
I could have given you a free virtual machine with the hosting software of your choice. (Linux,Apache, php, mysql)

In case you still want to move it, let me know. It's a 1Gb/s connection with aI 1000GB of free transfer volume per month as well.

Thanks, that's a kind offer. I'll definitely consider it when renewal comes around again.
