Karoo SIM trial offer

Post by stuartmitch » Fri Apr 26, 2019 4:35 pm

Hi all,

Something of a x-post from the official forum... but I wanted to extend this offer to the "power" community too. :D

We have been trialling our mokanix SIMs (mokanix.io) with Karoo since about Oct last year but really want to ramp up the number of test users. We want to bring a specific commercial offering to market during this year but need to gather more user behaviour stats. Therefore we are extending our trial.

If anyone wants to participate and see how the Karoo is enhanced with a SIM fitted please contact us (karoo@mokanix.io) to request a free trial SIM. We will cover all the costs of the trial - so you have nothing to lose! All we ask is that you use your Karoo as you would usually (but PLEASE don't download software updates over cellular!). We might send the occasional online survey for your feedback too.

We currently have trial participants in North America and Europe (and welcome more) but would also like to attract riders in other geographies (especially Africa and Asia).

Anyone want in? Please let us know: karoo@mokanix.io - all we need is shipping address. Happy to answer any questions below.

Thanks.

I’ve got one and installed but struggling to set the APN - all options are greyed on on the Cellular menu. Any suggestions?

Hi RossA, glad it arrived OK.

We don't see any issue with that our Karoo unless you are in airplane mode?

What software version are you using? (1.42.600.3 here)

Thanks!

BUMP... we have now put up a landing page to make it easier to sign up for the trial, just visit:

https://mokanix.io/enhance-your-karoo/

I'm pleased to report we have shipped more SIMs to the US, Europe and now Asia so things are going well but we still need more participants please.

No one said anything about prizes! :)

I got a very handy "credit card" sized multi-tool which immediately went into my wallet. Although a bit heavy, it's a super-useful thing that I've been meaning to buy one of anyway.

only special people get one of our multi-tools in their original shipment dthempel... others have to earn them through secret tasks we make up as we go along! ;)

We particularly like props on social media (Facebook especially - where Hammerhead can see it) if anyone fancies trying that to see if they can win a prize. :D

Sorry. Didn't mean to start anything, although if it gets people to try to win one...? :)

Just sent an email. I'm having a bit of trouble configuring the APN... or am dumb?

reply is on its way but for anyone else who has doubts about adding the APN:

All you need to do is:
  • go to Settings
  • scroll down to and select Cellular Data
  • select Access Point Names
  • hit the small + button at the top of the screen
  • add anything you like into the Name field (we use mokanix APN)
  • add mokanix into the APN field
  • hit the three dots in the top RH corner and select Save
  • then just select your new APN back on the APNs screen and use the arrows to go back to home
Appreciate it looks a little complicated but it’s really easy to do with the Karoo in hand! ;)

If you have any questions or comments, support@mokanix.io are happy to help. Some users are asking about their data consumption: we don't have an easy way of exposing that to trial participants (unless you want to develop to our APIs... we have had one taker for that already!) but are happy to let you know if you email to ask.

Should i keep the cellular data always on when using the Karoo for riding? (not when downloading firmware or maps).

Please do... that's the information we are trying to gather about how much data the Karoo consumes.

FYI, you have used 4.4385MB today. :)

Hey there.

Don't know if you would prefer I connect directly via the support email address or here, but since it may not be a support issue...

I live in Vermont and ride in areas where cell signals are marginal at best. It's nice to be able to put my feet up and take the tin foil helmet off when I get home.

Anyway, no luck with uploads via SIM when I get home (43.634223,-72.492469). My cell phone manages for voice, but I don't use it for cellular data, so don't have anything for comparison. When I'm in Massachusetts, your SIM appears to work fine.

So, just wondering if any kind of tinkering might help isolate a usable network, if one exists.

It's not really a huge issue, as that SIM is most useful when I'm away from my Vermont roads.

Thanks!

Hi,

Yeah, generally the support team are a little quicker. The plan that we have our US support on at the moment should work for the following networks:
  • Alaska Wireless
  • AT&T
  • Indigo Wireless
  • T-Mobile USA
  • Union Telecom
...I don't know which (if any) smaller operators offer connectivity where you are but if they ain't on the list, we don't have access to them. Hope this helps?
