That looks extremely tempting. Sad to say but by now Karoo would have been a strong competitor to that if HH had delivered anything close to what they'd promised.

I haven't read the review properly yet but I certainly will be doing so soon.

If you're looking for a non-Garmin that's appears solid and has excellent navigation give Sigma's Rox 12.0 a try. I've seen it on sale a few times for $100 off, making it competitively priced as well. I started this cycling season using the Rox 12.0 and been happy so far. I'd forgotten what it's like to not have the cycling computer be the focus of my rides - very nice to just have it work.

Could this be true?

A cycling computer that actually does turn-by-turn? All the time? That actually shows you the name of the road you are on? That comes with maps preloaded? A cycling computer that doesn't require you to be a sideloading guru to make it do what you thought it would do when you bought it (thanks for the instructions JohnJ80, but I refuse to expend the effort)?

A cycling computer that allows you to focus on your ride and not why it doesn't work like it did the last time you used it? A cycling computer that doesn't leave you feeling embarrassed because your buddy's Samsung phone is showing and telling him where to turn while your "fancy" HH brick is just staring silently at you?

Who knew...

Yeah, I'd been thinking about the 830, knowing it was coming, and assuming the 520 Plus was too new to be superseded. Now I'm getting the 530 for sure.

Why would you? Have you considered the usability of 530 and 830?

Considering usability, Hammerhead Karoo has actually the best of both worlds (both 530 and 830).
Why? Because 530 has no touchscreen of the 830, where 830 has not the extra buttons of the 530 to use it with full gloves in cold weather.

Karoo has the full option of both. And you should compare with the 1030 model, which has far more luxury for the software features, I agree, but is also far more expensive.
So still Hammerhead Karoo I would recommend to people who are in the market with a budget for a 530 or 830.

A 530 is $299, $100 less than a Karoo and is "missing" only the touchscreen (and some screen size). The list of "pluses" is almost too many to list, but high on the chart for me would be:

- phone/notification connectivity
- full base maps (no downloading piece by piece)
- a beeper for turn-by-turn and other notifications (with the Karoo can *never* have without strapping something else to your bike)
- workouts (if it even on HH's roadmap?)
- actually working connectivity to most sensors ( I guess yet to be "proven")
- an app store (Connect IQ)
- a companion phone app for some features (Garmin Connect)

Need I go on...?

And let's not forget:

-Turn-by-turn that actually works. All the time. Especially after software updates.
-ClimbPro. How cool is that?
-Garmin Connect. So much better than HH Dashboard.

If I didn't know better, I'd guess dobbel works for HH. Either that or this poster has the most flawless Karoo in existence.

Simply stated, I regret buying the Karoo. And not because of the $300, but because of the annoyance. It's been a constant battle ever since it was delivered. I would recommend it only to someone I genuinely dislike.

It's a very long list indeed:

- Bike profiles
- Strava live segments
- Live tracking
- Di2 integration
- Varia radar integration
- The ability to load TCX files and not just GPX
- Ability to load your own maps
- Mountain bike metrics
- Hydration/nutrition alerts
- Find my unit
- Virtual Partner
- etc

This sort of stuff is either only on HH's long-term roadmap (despite originally being promised a lot of these things well before now) or not even on it at all.

Just read a review of the Garmin Edge 530 and weep at all the things we don't have on Karoo and aren't likely to have any time soon (if ever).

if that´s all you need, than of course, go for it
You lack the combination of either touchscreen or the facility of the button.

For me more worth than Varia radar and nutrition and........ etc.

Dobbell,

If you know of any other potential fans of the Karoo I"m willing to sell mine for under $300. Seriously. Also, the Sigma Rox 12.0 can be used with the touchscreen or buttons. I'm not sure why it's not getting more attention. Many features and works well. Amazon has had it priced anywhere from $350 to $475.

Second hand price is marktconform Under 300 dollars.

If you would live in an area close to me than I would see an opportunity.

What Dobbel is saying is that the combination of buttons AND touchscreen is far more important that the device actually working as HH promised. So now when a new software update comes out, Dobbel has the distinct privilege of pushing a button OR tapping the screen to initiate an update that will almost assuredly make the Karoo worse in at least one way.

I'd be thrilled with my Karoo if it had only ONE button and no touchscreen as long as it worked as we were lead to believe it would.

Hi Brian,

Than also Wahoo would be a good option for you.
If Garmin would create a 530 with touchscreen for 350 dollars I am in

@Steve
... not to mention a charging connector in the foot. That's something I've thought about hacking into the Karoo for a while as it's the only way to get reliable dynamo charging.

It's called an 830, and it's only $50 more than that... or the same price you'd currently pay for a Karoo with probably less than half the "features". The gauntlet has been thrown by Garmin (if they even care). More likely, they're just iterating their product with new tech, constantly updating software, cheaper (but better) hardware, and moving through their own roadmap, etc. They release new HW yearly (if not more often).

What you write about Garmin is true.
But, what I mean about a 530 with a touchscreen is NOT a 830.
This because a 830 misses the buttons from the 530.

So the good side for HammerHead, they have combined that in the Karoo.
For me the Garmin is also therefore close, but still a miss.
With 350 dollars and both touchscreen ánd buttons it would be for me a nobrainer.

I am not that old, but I think I can predict a very nice world for our kids with all upgrades still to come, in waves
