Re: Improving Karoo through the use of Android Apps

Yep. I use them on almost every ride. The work great. Situational awareness is there and it gets past the wind. Audio TbT is a game changer in the bike computer market space. I've been encouraging HH to implement this quickly. Garmin can't do it with their current software and CPU and probably archi...

Rule #1 of marketing - if you've got it, talk about it. I don't see how this issue is worth beating them up for it. However they did it, it's a good thing. They look like they figured out the battery consumption issue absent evidence to the contrary now. That's a great thing because at 7.1% per hour...

Because they weren’t sure until they had field reports confirming it in quantity. That’s the problem with electronics and power measurements on chips.

They’ve been bitten by over promising and under delivering. I’d give them credit for being cautious for a change.

Re: Hidden "feature" in 1.66.645.3...

Battery consumption in electronics is highly dependent on the application, the application software, and even small changes in the application usage. In the semiconductor industry, it’s the hardest spec to generate and it seems like it’s always wrong. Often when you look at the power specs of a part...

Re: Another "Kickstarter" computer...

I also don’t think the buttonless interface is the right answer. No matter how good they think they can make the screen in the rain, it just won’t be good enough. Having to take your eyes off where you’re going to try and fix the problem on the fly is setting up for a disaster. And usually, when tou...

Re: Another "Kickstarter" computer...

After being an early adopter on the Garmin Edge 1000, the Wahoo ELEMNT, and now the Karoo - I can say I’ve learned my lesson. No new bike computers until they’ve been out at least a year. That would actually seem to be somewhat risky if you believe what users are saying on the FB Edge 1030 forum. Th...

Re: ATG Release 1.54.624.3

As far as I understand ANT+ (mostly from Wikipedia and this ; dunno about BTLE), the computer doesn't have to probe for sensors. When you activate the sensor, usually by movement, it starts transmitting and automatically detects collisions with other sensors and adapts by changing its transmission ...

Re: Garmin Varia Radar Support

It’s in their roadmap which is due for a refresh. In discussions I’ve had with them they see the benefit in supporting it. You should add your voice to this to help
Move it up the priority list.

Re: ATG Release 1.54.624.3

What I'm not getting: why the "attaching" of different sensors to bikes? Dashboards, yes, obviously you'd be interested in different things on say a MTB or a road bike. But if a sensor is not physically present, it's simply not connected, right? I don't have several bikes to try but at some point I...

Re: Garmin Vs Karoo update

Exactly. Their code base is probably 20 years old. It’s got to be a mess. Then multiply that by all the different permutations for country, language, and model and it just explodes. They are completely captive to that and at risk. If I understand things correctly, they are also stuck with a TI DSP o...

Re: ATG Release 1.54.624.3

If you look at the dynamic.watch website -which incidentally is very similar to the HH dashboard - you will see that their method of organizing routes is into “collections.” There is a big list that you can sort several ways like you can with Hammerhead, but then you can place a given route into one...

Re: ATG Release 1.54.624.3

They said there would be biweekly releases at the very beginning but did change that even as far back to when they expanded the ATG. At that point, they clearly said that the purpose was to use the ATG to get it right and that took precedence over the biweekly release. THere are still numerous peopl...

Re: ATG Release 1.54.624.3

I’d have to defend HH on that point. Getting it right is important and they seem to be trying to do that. The downside with the ATG is that the process is visible.

Re: OsmAnd & Komoot Use

Osmand isn't as intuitive. Once you have it loaded into Osmand, then you have go to "My Places" and then select "Tracks" and it should be there. Then, when you want to use it, you go to the Navigate menu and select that track. I just investigated another means of getting data into the Karoo. On the ...

Re: OsmAnd & Komoot Use

Try putting a BT earbud in and getting audio TbT through Komoot. Then you can turn off the screen and save battery too. I’ve experimented with it and it seems to work well.

Re: OsmAnd & Komoot Use

Two ways - 1. Set up a Dropbox account and then load the Dropbox app on your Karoo. Anything you put in Dropbox can then be accessed on the Karoo in any app that will read it. 2. Komoot is easy - just import the gpx file into your Komoot account on any other platform and when you log in to Komoot on...

Re: Garmin Vs Karoo update

I really don't see how Garmin would find it "hard to respond" if Karoo can't even do the basics. It looks like bike profiles are coming shortly but that's been what? 18 months for an incredibly basic feature. At that rate of development it'll be years, if ever, that some of those other features are...

Re: Garmin Vs Karoo update

John, I just re-read your instructions for sideloading. Good stuff. Given the above discussions, I think I'd like to give it a shot to give my Karoo a fair shake. Your instructions are obviously geared to the Mac you own. Is there anything significantly different if using a PC? If so, is there some...
